It is important to note that it is the Ammunition which dictates which "Class" of animal it is most suited for and not the actual weapon itself. Therefore one must look at the ammunition details rather than the weapons themselves to determine which type of ammunition is most well-suited for each animal and then find the appropriate weapon using that ammunition type.
For most weapons there is at least two types of ammunition is available. For firearms such as Rifles and Pistols these are generally divided in two types; ammunition with high expansion value and ammunition with a high penetration value.
- Expansion is commonly used to ensure a quick kill as the expansion will cause high damage and severe bleeding, especially on vital hits. However, this is highly dependent on achieving enough penetration to reach vitals.
- Penetration is typically used when deep penetration is needed (e.g. shooting the front of an animal or even at a quarter from front/rear). Higher penetration ammunition is also useful in situations where you encounter an animal which is of a higher class than your current ammunition/weapon. Example of this is using the .243 rifle which uses Class 2-6 ammunition and running into a Roosevelt Elk which is a Class 8 animal. In such a situation it is better to use high Penetration (typically Polymer-tipped ammunition) rather expansion focused ammunition.
For Shotguns and Bows (including crossbows) there is no expansion / penetration specific ammunition. Instead these weapons have shells, arrows or bolts with different class ranges. For these weapons you have more versatility when hunting as you can easily switch from hunting rabbits (Class 1) to hunting Roosevelt Elks (Class 8) by simply changing ammunition rather than changing weapon. As an example when using a shotgun you would simply switch from Birdshot to Slugs.
