The Gray Wolf is a class 5 predator. It can be hunted in Yukon Valley. It was the first wolf species to be featured in the game. The second is the Iberian Wolf.

Description[]

One of the most widely researched species in the world and simultaniously one of the most popular motifs in folklore and culture, the gray wolf is a staple of humanity's interactions with nature, be they in conflict or cooperation. Through appearances in fables, epics and modern media, the wolf has often been portrayed as a standing symbol of danger, loyalty, camaraderie, predation and the untamed spirit. The largest specimens of all wild canids, the Alaskan gray wolf can grow to 75 kg, but specimens this large are exceedingly rare. Male gray wolves stand nearly 1 metre in height and over 1.5 m in length. Female gray wolves are smaller than males but not by much and they commonly work in full cooperation. Their social capibilites, speed (30mph or quicker), stamina and amazing senses of smell, hearing and sight make them vicious and effective hunters, especially in larger packs. The pack has a strict hiearchy and is generally led by an alpha male and female known as the alpha pair. The rest of the pack is normally the offpsring of the alpha pair. Ungulates are the main prey of wolves wherever they are available. In Yukon Valley the main prey species are caribou and moose. Wolves are heavily managed in Alaska and are subject to frequent control efforts outside protected areas. Despite frequent culling Alaska is home to one of the world's largest population of wolves numbering well over 7000. The wolf is on the Endangered Species List in the continental United States.

Trivia and Patches[]

General:

  • Wolf howls can be heard up to 6 miles (Nearly 10 km) in forests and 10 miles in a open habitat (plains, tundra, etc)
  • Melanistic wolves are significantly more common in North American populations than in European populations. This is because of interbreeding that happened thousands of years ago between wild wolves and domesticated dogs that belonged to the indigenous people of North America. Although the dark coloration helps wolves in heavily-forested areas blend in better, litters produced by two melanistic wolves have a 25% of dying before they’re even born.
  • The French name of this canid is "Loup Gris"

In-game:

  • Wolves in the game growls before they attack you (In general). These growls aren't a trackable sound (They aren't a "warning" or mating call)
  • It is not entirely confirmed but in the game, if you kill the alpha (the dominant and usually the oldest pack member and the only one allowed to breed) while being attacked, the other pack members will flee. [Rumors]
