The Springbok is a class 3 animal. It can be hunted in the Vurhonga Savanna Reserve.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a slender, medium-sized antelope with stethoscope-shaped horns, native to the open, treeless plains of southern Africa. The springbok is named after its unique behavior, also known as pronking, where it leaps up to 2 metres high with an arched back. It can also run very fast and has been clocked at around 80 kilometers an hour. The springbok weighs between 27.00 kg and 42.00 kg and stands up to 86 cm tall at the shoulder, with female springbok generally being the smaller of the two genders. Despite similarities, the springbok is not a true gazelle, clear in its scientific name (Antidorcas, meaning not-a-gazelle). A major reason for this distinction is the springbok's dorsal skin-fold, which conceals a mass of white hair, revealed when mating, excited, alert or simply pronking. The springbok lives in mixed groups and is a mixed feeder, too. It has great speed on land (55mph). However can be outrun by the cheetah in short sprints and by wild dogs over a longer distance. However an individual wild dog would have trouble since springbok still have the stamina to outrun a single dog. Since the turn of the last century, the Spingbok has been and still is the national emblem of the South African Rugby Team.
