There is a Ute folktale that explains how deer became deer. Two young fawns encounter a rabbit who claims to be their grandfather and asks them to fetch him food. They explain that they get their food from a creature that resides in the sky and ventures down at a set time each day. When the creature comes down, the rabbit eats the food and finds it good, and the next time it visits he shoots and kills it. Having exhausted the remaining supply, the fawns are forced to go into the mountains, eat grass, and become deer. Gently sloping meadows teeming with wildflowers like these must have provided them with plenty.
